Alibaba DAMO Predicts 10 Technology Trends in 2023, Highlights Generative AI

Alibaba FIRST Academy(“DAMO”) shares 10 predictions regarding the leading technology trends that will shape the industry in 2023.

One of the highlights of this blognewstech global research initiative from the Alibaba Group isGenerative Artificial Intelligence(Generative AI). The application of generative artificial intelligence is expected to continue to grow, especially in changing the digital content production process.

With future technological advancements and reduced costs, Generative AI will be an inclusive technology that can significantly increase the variety, creativity, and efficiency of content creation, according to DAMO.

Another important technology that is expected to emerge is dual-engine decision intelligence. Powered by operations optimization and machine learning, these intelligent systems enable dynamic, comprehensive and real-time allocation of resources, such as real-time power delivery, port throughput optimization, airport booth assignments, and improvements in manufacturing processes. This capability, called DAMOi, can help businesses improve operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, cloud computing and security are expected to continue to play a key role in the digital transformation of businesses. As security and cloud computing technologies become more integrated than ever before, security services can move to be cloud native, platform-oriented, and intelligent.

Other trends that are developing according to DAMO's predictions are pre-trained multimodal foundation models, chiplets, in-memory processing, hardware-software integrated cloud computing architecture, predictable structures. based on the synergy of edge-cloud (predictable fabric), computational imaging, and large-scale virtual urban planning (Urban Digital Twins).

The top technology trends of 2023 were formulated by DAMO through an analysis of public papers and patent applications over the last three years, as well as interviews with nearly 100 scientists, entrepreneurs and engineers around the world.

“Looking to 2023, advances in multiple technologies will drive software/hardware design and integration of computing and communications technologies. Widespread adoption of the technology will facilitate the rollout of AI and other digital technologies in vertical markets and encourage public and private sector and individual collaboration in security technology and security management. Innovation driven by technological advances and their industry-specific applications has become an irreversible trend,” said Jeff Zhang, Head of Alibaba DAMO Academy.

Here are 4 technologies that Alibaba DAMO predicts will advance and surge in adoption in 2023 and beyond:

1. Generative AI

Generative AI generates new content based on a specific set of text, images or audio files. Currently, Generative AI is mostly used to produce prototypes and drafts that are applied in several scenarios, such as games, advertisements, or graphic design. As technology advances in the future and reduces costs, Generative AI will become an inclusive technology that can significantly increase the variety, creativity, and efficiency of content creation.

In the next three years, DAMO foresees the emergence of a more mature business model and ecosystem as Generative AI is widely marketed. Generative AI models will be more interactive, safe and intelligent, helping humans complete various creative tasks.

2. Dual engine decision intelligence

Previously, the traditional decision-making method was based on Operations Research or Operations Research. However, in an increasingly complex world, the ability of this method is limited, especially in dealing with problems that contain great uncertainty. The response was somewhat slow to large-scale problems.

Therefore, the world of academia and industry began to include machine learning in optimizing decisions. The two machines complement each other, and when used together, can increase the speed and quality of decision making.

In the future, this technology is expected to be widely used in various scenarios to support dynamic, comprehensive and real-time resource allocation, such as real-time allocation of electricity, optimization of port traffic, determination of aircraft aprons or aircraft stands, and manufacturing process improvement.

In the future, this intelligence for decision making is predicted by DAMO to be applied in more scenarios.

3. Cloud-native security

Cloud-native security is implemented not only to get security that is native to cloud infrastructure, but also to improve security services by utilizing cloud-native technology.

As a result, security technology and cloud computing are becoming increasingly integrated. We've seen applied technologies evolve from containerized deployments to microservices to serverless models. And security services have shifted to become services that are native, more detailed, platform-oriented, and intelligent.

Over the next three to five years, DAMO predicts cloud-native security will become more versatile and more adaptable to multicloud architectures. Thus it will be more conducive to building a security system that is dynamic, end-to-end, precise, and can be implemented in a hybrid environment.

4. Model pre-trained multimodal foundation

The pre-trained multimodal foundation model has become a new paradigm and infrastructure for building artificial intelligence systems. AI systems are evolving from mono-modal systems focused on text, speech, or visuals, to general-purpose systems. And at the core of these general purpose systems is multimodality.

DAMO predicts that, in the future, these foundation models will become the foundational infrastructure for AI systems for images, text, and audio, and will empower AI systems with cognitive intelligence capabilities to reason, answer questions, summarize, and create.
